MSc/PhD Scholarship Program in Railway Engineering Announcement, 2017

Background

African Railway Education and Research Institute (ARERI) is one of African Center of Excellency supported by the World Bank. The aim of the center is to strengthen railway professionals’ development through short-term training, MSc and PhD level education, and research in Ethiopian and the region at large. To this effect ARERI is offering scholarships to citizens in African countries to pursue MSc/PhD studies in Railway Engineering for the second semester of 2016 / 2017 academic year.

Eligible Applicants

Applicants have to:-
  1. Have completed their last degree less than six years ago during the time of application
  2. Be Citizens of African countries
  3. For MSc applicants: Applicants should have Bachelor’s degree qualification with at least a CGPA of 3.00/4.00 for males and 2.5/4.00 for females (Countries which uses other grading should be converted to 4.00 scale).
  4. For PhD applicants: Applicants should have MSc degree qualification with at least a CGPA of 3.50 for males and 3.25 for females (Countries which uses other grading should be converted to 4.00 scale).
  5. The applicant should write a personal statement/motivation letter describing the candidate`s interest to join the program.
  6. The applicant should have two letters of recommendations of advisors/ supervisors from previous educational institutions.
  7. For Ph.D., research proposal including a detailed work plan (10 to 15 pages). Plagiarism will be checked!

Female candidates and candidates from less privileged regions or groups as well as candidates with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.

 Eligible Fields

For MSc in Railway Engineering (Rolling Stock)

Applications may come from engineering subject areas with strong relevance in Mechanical Engineering including Mechanical Design, Industrial Engineering, and Thermal Engineering, or related fields.
For MSc in Railway Engineering (Civil Infrastructure)
Applications may come from engineering subject areas with strong relevance in Civil Engineering including Structural, Geotechnical, and Construction Technology, or related fields.

For PhD in Railway Engineering

MSc in Railway Electrical, Mechanical or Civil Engineering, Engineering Geology or related fields

 Duration and Commencement

Scholarships are available for two years (Master) or four semesters only and four years for PhD. The scholarship will be initially granted for one semester and may be extended for those who completed the first semester successfully.
Application Procedure
The applicants must submit the softcopy through the following email addresses birhanu.beshah@aait.edu.et or birhanu.reesom@aait.edu.et. Applicants who meet all requirements will be selected and awarded the scholarship according to their academic status. The application will only be complete if the following documents are submitted:
  1. Signed curriculum vitae scanned in PDF; please use the Europass CV template (http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu)
  2. Certified scanned PDF copies of all university degree certificates
  3. Certified scanned PDF copies of all university transcripts (for Ethiopians, those who have university transcripts)
  4. Letter of motivation (Maximum 2 pages)
  5. Academic reference from senior lecturer and proof of employment if applicable (scanned PDF copy)
  6. All the above documents should be scanned in PDF in one document. Applicants who submitted separately will not be accepted.
  7. Selected candidates may take entrance exam and score a pass mark.
Scholarship Type
  • There are two types of scholarship:
  1. Tuition fee alone which includes application fee, registration fee, course and research fees ($5,000 – 7,000 for MSc and $10,000 – 15,000 for PhD students for two and four years respectively)
  2. Tuition fee plus stipend. Stipend includes living cost, health insurance and transportation (stipend will be from $500 – 700 for MSc and 700 – 1,000 for PhD per month per student).
  • Self sponsored applicants are highly encouraged and half of the tuition fee will be exempted.
