The Sokoine University of Agriculture through SACIDS Foundation for One Health (SACIDS), in collaboration with the Directorate of Prevention Services at the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (MoHCDGEC), organised a 3-day training workshop on digital surveillance in Zanzibar 16 – 18 June 2021. The main objective of the workshop was to train Point of Entry (PoE) participants on the essentials of the digital surveillance form and how to use the digital system so as to enhance detection in public health.

Training participants came from different sea ports and airports in Zanzibar and included port health officers, travel control officers, immigration officers, customs officers, airport operation officers, port security officers, environmental health officers, inspectors and a journalist.

Background Information
SACIDS in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (MoHCDGEC), developed digital traveler’s surveillance system in November 2020 to enhance surveillance of travelers through exit and entry screening. The system was validated by stakeholders in December 2020 and was piloted. The plan is to roll out and to operationalise the system in 54 points of entries in Tanzania Mainland to enhance detection of public health events. The existing system has challenges of delayed detection of unusual events, labor intensity, slow and hard to manage and analyse data.
